Regional Councils
As well as being overseen by a Regional Bishop, each region has an elected regional council. The regional councils are constituted under the Regions Ordinance 1995, which also outlines their various functions. These include:
- implementing resolutions passed by the Synod or Standing Committee
- developing ministry strategies for the region
- employing ministry workers in the region
- managing any endowment held for the region
- …and other administrative and ministry related functions.
Each regional Council consists of 12 members:
- The Regional Bishop
- One layperson from each Mission Area in the region elected by the regional electors[1]
- One minister from each Mission Area in the region elected by the regional electors
- Any necessary additional persons appointed by the council to bring the total number of members to 12.
Members are elected during the first ordinary session of each Synod. The regional council’s term of office is, therefore, three years.
For further information about a particular regional council or its activities, please contact the relevant Regional Bishop’s Office.
[1] The “regional electors” of a region are the Regional Bishop, each minister of a parish in the region who is a Synod member, each person who is a lay Synod representative of a parish in the region, and each other person who is a parishioner of a church in the region and is a member of the Synod (but is not a regional elector of another region).
