Regions (Change of Name) Ordinance 1997

        Explanatory Statement

        1. Under clause 3(2) of the Regions Ordinance 1995 each region has the name determined or altered by the Archbishop. Where the name of a region is changed, the name of the regional council changes as a consequence.

        2. There are a number of ordinances which refer to a specific region by name. It is desirable to include a provision in the Regions Ordinance 1995 to the effect that if the name of the region is changed under clause 3(2) specific references to that region and its regional council in other ordinances are also changed. This will avoid the need to specifically identify and amend such other ordinances.

        3. Under clause 2 of the Assistant Bishops (Bishop Coadjutor) Ordinance 1947 an assistant bishop bears, during the period of his appointment, such title, if any, as the Archbishop determines with the concurrence of the Standing Committee. If the name of a region is changed the Archbishop, with the Standing Committee's concurrence, may wish to change the title of the bishop of that region. However there are a number of Ordinances which refer to a specific regional bishop by title. It is desirable to include a provision in the Assistant Bishops (Bishop Coadjutor) Ordinance 1947 to the effect that if the title of an assistant bishop is changed as a consequence of the change of the name of a region, then each ordinance referring to that title is taken to have changed. This will avoid the need to specifically identify and amend such other ordinances.
