The Synod Service of Holy Communion was held in the Cathedral Church of St Andrew, Sydney, at 2 pm on Monday 4 June 2001 at which the Preacher was Bishop Wallace Benn, Bishop of Lewes.

Following the Cathedral Service, the Special Session of the 45th Synod assembled in the Wesley Theatre at 4.30 pm under the Presidency of Bishop Paul Barnett, Administrator of the Diocese of Sydney. The Synod had afternoon and evening sittings on 4 June 2001 and an evening sitting 5 June 2001.
